Why Directory Submissions Get Rejected
Nine reasons account for almost every directory rejection, and every one of them is fixable in under an hour. Here is the exact diagnosis and the fix for each.
First: Read the Rejection Email Carefully
Most curated directories send a one-line reason: "submission did not meet our quality criteria", "site not publicly accessible", "duplicate listing detected", or simply "rejected". Even a vague reason narrows the cause.
If you got no email at all and the listing simply never appeared, treat it as a soft rejection and work through the nine reasons below. In our data, 92% of rejections trace back to one of them.
The 9 Reasons (Ranked by Frequency)
Based on 8,000+ submissions we have seen across our service.
Free email address (gmail / outlook / yahoo)
~30% of rejectionsWhy it happens: Curated directories assume a free email = side project = won't maintain the listing. Many auto-reject before a human ever sees the submission.
The fix: Submit from founder@yourdomain.com. If you do not have email on your domain yet, set up Google Workspace or Zoho before you start.
Site is not publicly accessible
~20% of rejectionsWhy it happens: Login wall, "coming soon" page, broken homepage, or a staging URL behind basic auth. The reviewer cannot evaluate the product.
The fix: Have a real public homepage with a clear value prop, screenshots, pricing, and a way to start. A waitlist landing page is fine for BetaList but not for G2 or Capterra.
Thin or low-quality screenshots
~15% of rejectionsWhy it happens: No screenshots, blurry screenshots, mockups instead of real UI, or screenshots with browser chrome and personal bookmarks visible.
The fix: Upload at least 3 clean 1920×1080 PNGs of the actual product. Crop browser chrome. Annotate one feature per screenshot.
Wrong or spammy category
~10% of rejectionsWhy it happens: A note-taking app submitted under "AI Agents" because the founder thought it would rank better. Reviewers spot this in seconds.
The fix: Pick the single category your buyer would search. Two or three secondary tags are fine, but five identical-looking categories looks like keyword stuffing.
Duplicate listing already exists
~8% of rejectionsWhy it happens: Someone, maybe a co-founder or an old contractor, already submitted the product months ago and you forgot.
The fix: Search the directory for your brand name and domain before submitting. If a duplicate exists, claim the listing instead of creating a new one.
Description reads like SEO spam
~7% of rejectionsWhy it happens: Keyword-stuffed descriptions ("best SaaS tool for SaaS teams to do SaaS"), unnatural anchor text, or copy-pasted boilerplate from other directories.
The fix: Write a human description. Lead with the outcome, name the user, mention 2–3 features, end with a differentiator. Do not exceed the directory's character limit.
Inconsistent brand info across the web
~5% of rejectionsWhy it happens: Reviewer Googles your brand and finds three different taglines, two different logos, and a dead Twitter account. Looks abandoned.
The fix: Lock your tagline, short description, and logo before you submit anywhere. Update your About page, Twitter bio, LinkedIn page, and existing listings to match.
No social proof signals
~3% of rejectionsWhy it happens: Empty Twitter, no LinkedIn page, no GitHub, zero customer logos. Strict review-site directories (G2, Capterra) treat this as "not a real business".
The fix: Set up the basics: company LinkedIn page, Twitter/X handle, and at least 1–2 testimonials. For G2 specifically, you need verified user reviews to unlock a full profile.
Submitted too early after launch
~2% of rejectionsWhy it happens: Some directories require the product to be live for 30+ days, have a working pricing page, or have a non-trivial customer base.
The fix: Use launch-platform directories (BetaList, Launching Next, BetaPage) for pre-launch and 0–30 day stage. Save G2, Capterra, GetApp for after you have paying customers.
The Re-Submission Sequence
Audit the rejection email
If the directory sent a reason, fix that one specifically. If they did not, work down the list above starting with email address and public access.
Run our Rejection Analyzer
Paste your URL and intended description into the report generator. It flags missing metadata, off-policy phrases, and weak screenshots before you re-submit.
Fix once, re-use everywhere
Update your master submission spec. Most rejections happen across many directories at once, so one fix prevents the next 50.
Wait the cooldown period
Most directories want 14–30 days between submissions. Re-submitting same-day looks like spam and locks you out further.
Re-submit with a short note
In the additional comments field, briefly explain what changed (e.g. "added screenshots, fixed pricing page"). Reviewers appreciate the transparency.
